Guest Contributor Gizelle: How to be a Frugal Foodie

Hey all!

So, firstly I have an off-topic... question for you:

Have any of you heard of a show called Extreme Cheapskate? Or something like that?

I'm all for frugality, but... Oh. My... WHAT?!?

My (wonderful, hunky, sweet) husband has been gone this weekend. Last night, I kissed my four sweet babies goodnight at 7:30. I felt a little giddy having a quiet home to myself for the night... It was cool for like an hour... then it was completely boring.

I was perusing the internet, and stumbled upon the show. I'm not a big TV-watcher, but it sounded interesting. I thought I might find some good ideas, (and to be fair, some of the ideas were worth considering) so I picked an episode.

And went into shock...

You see, there's practical frugality... and then there's this guy:

The man they covered in the show went into restaurants asking people if they were done with their food. If they were, he proceeded to ask if he could scrape off their un-eaten food into a take-home box. Then he'd go to the next table and do the same. His poor wife was completely embarrassed by this. He'd take it all home and eat it... also he got his wife some wilted, dirty, roses, and a questionable-looking teapot out of a dumpster for their 25th anniversary.

I think I got dry-mouth from having my jaw dropped for such an extended period of time.

There's a fine line between frugality and... well... that guy.

But maybe I'm wrong.

Have any of you seen that show? Thoughts?

Anyway, we can move on to the real reason for this post:

I was recently contacted by a reader, Gizelle.

She had created a beautiful infographic with Pennies & Pancakes in mind, and wondered if I might want to share it with all of you.

Well, how could I not? Super flattering, I tell ya... plus the Black Beans & Rice recipe looks like it would be yummy all on its own or stuffed in whole wheat burritos.

There's just one little thing I'd like to point out before you get into the beautiful graphic below: There are three recipes. Two of them seem to be pretty over-priced per serving to me... the frittata and the black beans and rice. She got her pricing from another website, so I don't blame her, but honestly, you will NOT pay nearly that much per serving on those two recipes. The tuna salad is closer to correct.

Take a gander.

Thanks, Gizelle!

  2. I saw that same episode on tv once. I just shook my head. I can't imagine anyone living that way, especially embarrassing his wife like that. He obviously doesn't care about her feelings. I was surprised the restaurant didn't kick him out, I certainly wouldn't want someone to come begging for my scraps. I have not had any desire to watch any more episodes.

  3. My son is a chef in a fine dining restaurant. I can assure you that no legitimate restaurant owner would allow someone to take food like that. If the person got sick from the food it would be on the restaurant owner's back. I couldn't watch the show. The family that used rags for toilet paper and washed them made me sick. Let them get sick from some stomach virus and see how that works out. Hot water, bleach and a dryer doesn't get rid of all germs and bacteria. There's frugal, then there's "cheapstake" for the sake of ratings.

  4. I found your blog this weekend and have been reading posts when I came across this one. Must not have been too many episodes as I watched both the one you mention and Pattye above. No I don't see that as frugal. I was embarrassed for them. Especially the lady with the toilet paper rags who fed her dinner guests park grass that she had the kids clip then explained her toiletries.

But, I thoroughly have enjoyed reading your blog and going to try the yogurt and that Utah scones looks delish.
