  1. Andrea, I'm sharing this blog with all of MBASA (the spouse association at BYU) because most of us are living on very little and you're a genius! So, thanks for the great info, and I love you! -Lacey

    2. I have tried your refried beans recipe and love it. I had a question about your crockpot yogurt recipe. Does it matter if you use lactose milk? I would have to use that kind.

    3. Hi Meesha,
I am so sorry it's taken me a while to respond to your question. I have never personally made yogurt using lactose-free milk, so I can't tell you for sure... however, there are several recipes/articles online that say that you can. Here is a link to one of the recipes: http://www.livingwithout.com/recipes/Dairy-Free-Homemade-Yogurt-1512-1.html
I hope that helps! Good luck!

heat oven to 400 degrees F. Mix pancake mix and water to make a runny mix. Form pan out of tin foil with high edges. Put pan on cookie sheet and pour in mix. Place pan in oven and cook for about 10 minutes until toothpick comes out clean and top is slightly brown.

  5. You are such an inspiration I am thinking about starting my own blog but I'm sure how much I have to offer to others. I am a newlywed who is starting the clean eating recipes including things like your bread and tortillas. Thanks for all this helpful information.

  6. Love your site! Just tried Grandma's Country White Bread--FANTASTIC. I did wind up with about 8 cups of flour like some of the other bakers. My 12 year old son ate half the loaf and said it was the best bread he's ever eaten--quite a testimonial! He needs it too ;) Maybe it will put some meat on him--Ha!
I'm looking forward to trying the refried beans next. Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. used the Pinterest button at the top of the page and it gives me the 404 error and says that the page I am looking for is not found... wanted to connect thru there but figured you didn't know it wasn't working. I am going to pinterest search your name and see if I can find it that way... Thank you for all the great tips and recipes...

  8. Hello! Just found your blog today! I cannot wait to try several of your recipes! They all look amazing, affordable, and simple. I was wondering if you would be willing to put together a beginners shopping list, things that you always have on hand, but that someone starting out might not.

    Thank you!

    1. Jessica, I'm happy you found me. :) I love your idea, and will consider doing that in a future post. (This really is a nap-time hobby thing, and I don't spend hours at the computer... so it might take me a while.) Another person asked me to post what I fed my family for an entire month, along with shopping lists, and how much I spent. Maybe I could include a "beginner's shopping list" with that post. Sound good?

    2. Sounds great!Take your time, no rush, I understand completely.

Hopefully this doesn't sound cheesy, but you are helping a ton of families get back to the basics in the kitchen. I love love love that you explain everything so well and provide step by step pictures. It really is awesome. After reading one of your recipes I don't have to call a friend and ask a bunch of silly-everyone-should-already-know-this questions. I think I'm going to try your bean burritos tomorrow. :)

      Thank you!

  10. Hi Andrea, I absolutely love your blog and have tried some of your recipes and they are wonderful. Would it be `possible for you to direct me to your chicken pot pie recipe? I love the idea of putting the bisquick type topping on the top. Thank you so much.

    1. Thanks! I'm really glad you've enjoyed it so far. I actually don't have the chicken pot pie recipe posted yet. I really only post once or twice a week, so I still have TONS of recipes to put on here... the pot pie is one of them. :) I'll try to get that one up sooner rather than later, as I've had several requests for it. Maybe in a few weeks... :)

I actually do have a post in the works, but I can't seem to get the format I want. I may just go ahead and post it anyway. Thank you for checking on me!

  12. My sister found this blog and introduced me to a world of savings and delectability beyond my wildest dreams. This is a very well put together blog and I must say: Job well done. I have literally gone through every single one of your recipes and written them down on note cards because I was out of ink in the printer. Then I saw your post on how to refill ink cartridges and my mind was blown. Thanks for being awesome and feeding your children food that will be beneficial to them. Once again great job. Any tips for my blog? http://www.naturalwinners.blogspot.com

    Thanks! ♥

  15. Have you ever tried making your detergents? I'd be curious to see what the savings is and how well they work. I know some all natural cleaners (homemade too) don't work as well as the usual cleaners I'd buy.

    Here is an example: http://www.onegoodthingbyjillee.com/2013/04/make-your-own-dishwasher-detergent-tabs.html

I would actually think this would work pretty well. Just not sure if it would cost less than Finish powder. I use the smallest amount per load so the box lasts a long time.

    1. Hi Laurie,

I did try making my own dish detergent once upon a time. It just never worked as well as the store stuff, and my dishes never quite got clean to my liking... so I've been hesitant to try a new recipe. BUT if you try the one above or a different one and find that it works as well as store-stuff, I'd LOVE to know about it. :) Thanks for stopping by!

  16. Hello!
I'm self-employed and my husband has gone back to school, so income is pretty much feast or famine. I'm really excited about 10 of your recipes here, especially the totally homemade hamburgers (that will hopefully cut down on fast-food binges).

    Thank you!

  20. Hi! I just wanted to take a moment to tell you that I love this blog! I came across it yesterday, and was instantly inspired to actually DO some of the things that I've only thought and talked about until now. Bread and beans are two things that kind of intimidate me, but today I tried Grandma's Country White Bread, the Oatmeal Bread, and the Crockpot Refried Beans. It was all an absolute hit. My kids devoured an entire loaf of bread within minutes of it being out of the oven and were begging for more. The beans...my daughter said, "I don't like these, mom. I LOVE THEM!!" These will definitely be some go-to recipes around here! Thank you so much for the time and obvious love that you put into this blog.

  21. Andrea, I wanted to let you know that I'm linking to your blog in my blog post tomorrow (January 21st, 2015). I love your blog and wanted to share it with everybody. My blog post is for refried beans. I changed your recipe to fit the tastes of my family but made sure to give you full credit for the original recipe. I'm still fairly new to blogging and hope this is ok. You can find it at http://theslowroadtohealthy.com/ Thank you for all you do and I'm so happy you decided to continue blogging.

  22. Hi! I've made several recipes from your site, but your crackpot refried beans are my favorite. I'm planning to write a blog post featuring recipes for foods that I prefer to make instead of buy, and I'm wondering if you'd allow me to use a photo from that recipe in a photo collage for the post. I'll also link back to the recipe, as I don't have my own (I follow yours exactly). My site is winsteadwandering.com. Thank you!
